Session 2: Linking Vocabulary, Formative Assessment, and Technology
STEAM Resources—http://www.stemresources.com/ … Math Users Guide Appendix F
vocabulary instruction tips and resources
based on Marzano's process of vocabulary instruction
applicable to all subject areas
good for ESL, SPED
http://www.visuwords.com/ – online graphical dictionary, concept mapping
http://www.wordle.net/ – toy for creating “word clouds.” Enter text into wordle, and it creates a collage that emphasizes words based on their importance/frequency in the text
Ideas for implementation
--students type a description of a character from a novel or story, putting the most important words in multiple times.
--copy and paste a paragraph from a text to show important words... to introduce or close a topic
--teach prepositions... create a wordle and have students tell where one word is compared to another
--teach spatial organization the same as prepositions above
